Glebe Cabin
Project overview
Characterful Home Office in an AONB
The Brief
Our clients in Bath were looking to create a dedicated home office, separate from the main house, while also incorporating practical storage to the rear in a shed-style space. Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and positioned close to the boundary, the project required careful consideration around planning and height restrictions.
Design Approach
The aim was to design a space that felt completely at home within its surroundings — something characterful, understated, and in keeping with the charm of the existing cottage garden. We opted for a traditional pitched roof finished with clay tiles to reflect the local vernacular, paired with board and batten sawn oak cladding to introduce warmth, texture, and a timeless quality. Tucked away amongst well-established trees, the building has been carefully positioned so it quietly sits within the landscape, as if it has always been there.
Planning & Considerations
Due to the location within an AONB and the building’s proximity to the boundary, planning permission was required, particularly as the design exceeded standard permitted development height allowances. Our team worked closely through this process to ensure the design met all requirements while maintaining the integrity of the original concept.
